Abstract
Abstract The gap between theory and profession has been the issue of researchers in multi-disciplinary fields for many years. Urban design as a practice-based discipline faces a broad challenge, that the gap of theories proposed in this field is far from the profession. Several attempts have been done to bridge the gap between theory and practice through practical strategies, but this gap still remains. This study aimed at investigating this gap in contemporary urban design based on analyzing the urban design experts and recognizing the main criteria to measure this gap in contemporary urban design. Since urban design is an interdisciplinary branch of design, the connection between theories and their continuity in practice is critical. The result of research indicates that the participation of different stakeholders of theory and practice, supporting skills, and practice-based approaches such as evidence-based practice can bridge the gap between theory and practice in contemporary urban design.
